In a memorable celebration, fifty lucky participants took part in a unique running event along Glasgow Airport's runway on a chilly Thursday morning at 3am. This extraordinary experience was part of Glasgow's year-long civic programme marking 850 years since it was granted Royal Burgh status.

The "Run the Runway" event was a collaborative effort between Glasgow City Council, Glasgow Airport, AJ Bell Great Scottish Run, and local run collectives Stride and Glasgow-based Outlier Run Club. Matthew Wilson, head of aerodrome operations at Glasgow Airport, mentioned that staging the event on a live international airport runway required meticulous planning and coordination.

Glasgow City Council leader Susan Aitken described the runway run as the most unique event in the Glasgow 850 programme. Sarah McSharry, a Bellahouston Road Runner who participated in the run, expressed her enjoyment of the unique experience, saying it was a memory she would cherish forever.

Wilson also stated that it was a privilege to welcome runners on the runway for the unique event. Glasgow Airport, which has been part of the city's story for over six decades, played a significant role in the Glasgow 850 celebrations in a memorable and distinctive way.

The participants completed a 4.5km route during a short break in airside operations. More than 800 people who will be taking part in next month's Great Scottish Run applied for one of the 50 spots available to run along the runway, demonstrating the event's popularity.

Limited places are still available for the Great Scottish Run 10km and half-marathon, which take place in Glasgow on October 5. If you missed out on the Run the Runway event, this could be your chance to experience a thrilling running event in the heart of Glasgow.

The partnership for the Run the Runway event was not explicitly disclosed, leaving the question of who initiated the project a mystery. However, the event undoubtedly added a unique and unforgettable chapter to Glasgow's rich history and its ongoing celebrations.
