Rumors Swirl About Potential Replacement for Jagdeep Dhankhar

In a surprising turn of events, Vice-President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar, has tendered his resignation. The sudden exit has sparked political discussions and speculations across the nation.

Dhankhar's resignation comes amidst rumours of tension between him and the government, possibly stemming from his absence from the tarmac at Palam airport when US Vice-President J.D. Vance arrived in New Delhi in April. Some BJP leaders claim that as the Vice-President was asked to "go slow in his public remarks", he "started to feel stifled".

The Vice-President's relentless attacks on the judiciary were putting the government in a tricky spot. It was speculated that Dhankhar's move to entertain the Opposition's motion against Justice Yashwant Varma had seriously ruffled feathers at the highest levels of the government. The Vice-President's remarks on "secularism and socialism" also annoyed the government.

There were reports that Dhankhar's wife asked him to "keep calm" and complete his full term before resigning. However, the Vice-President formally cited "health reasons" for his sudden exit. Several BJP insiders suggest that there were underlying issues leading to his resignation.

The BJP had asked all its functionaries and leaders not to comment on the contentious issue of secularism and socialism. The final rupture between the Vice-President and the government came when the Vice-President accepted the Opposition motion to remove Justice Yashwant Varma.

Anandiben Patel, the Governor of Uttar Pradesh, is another name that has surfaced in political whispers regarding the succession of Jagdeep Dhankhar. Manoj Sinha, the Lieutenant-Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, is also being discussed as a potential successor. D.Y. Chandrachud, a former Chief Justice, is another contender.

There are concerns within the BJP that Dhankhar's resignation could have an adverse impact on the Jat community in northern India, particularly in Haryana and Rajasthan. The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in Bihar has alleged that Dhankhar's resignation is part of a larger BJP conspiracy to sideline Nitish Kumar, the Chief Minister of Bihar.

Interestingly, the BJP is expected to retain the Vice-President's post. The post is perceived to remain with the BJP, given the lack of publicly identified non-BJP candidates for the Indian Vice Presidency.

As the political landscape unfolds, the nation waits with bated breath for the next developments in this saga.
