Rumor circulating: Mexico's ex-first lady planning relocation to Madrid?
Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller Denies Move to Madrid Amidst Media Reports
Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller, the academic and wife of former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has denied reports that she has moved to Madrid, Spain. In a statement on social media, she categorically rejected claims made by Spanish media, particularly the ABC newspaper, that she had relocated to Spain to live in an exclusive neighborhood.
According to ABC, Gutiérrez requested a residence permit in Madrid in March 2025, allegedly to settle there with her son, Jesús Ernesto, who is expected to start studies at the Complutense University. However, Gutiérrez’s denial contradicts the assertion about an imminent move or permanent residence in Madrid.
While there is a media report of a residence permit application and plans to move, the primary source—Gutiérrez Müller—refutes having relocated or changed residence.
The controversy surrounding Gutiérrez and her family has been escalating due to their association with President López Obrador's ideals. Some have criticized Gutiérrez and her son for their extravagant international travel and plans to move to exclusive neighborhoods, which are seen as incompatible with the public and personal austerity promoted by López Obrador's party, Morena.
Gutiérrez has been labeled the "gray eminence" behind López Obrador's 2019 letter asking the King of Spain to apologize for the conquest of Mexico. In response to the ABC report, she compared the newspaper to Mexican newspapers such as Reforma and El Universal, labeling them as "professional libelers of the most rancid and corrupt right-wing politics."
Notably, Gutiérrez's son is expected to start studies at the Complutense University in Madrid. However, she has stated that neither she nor Jesús Ernesto has moved to Spain or anywhere else.
In a recent development, Gutiérrez visited López Obrador in Palenque, Chiapas, over the weekend. She expressed her love for both López Obrador and her son. Meanwhile, López Obrador's son, Andreas Manuel Lopez Beltran, has been criticized for vacationing at a luxury hotel in Tokyo.
Gutiérrez has been a prominent figure in Mexico's academic and political circles for decades, having worked at the Meritorious Autonomous University of Puebla. She has also written extensively on various topics, including politics and social issues. In her statement, she claimed that López Obrador had reduced poverty and inequality in Mexico and returned power to the people.
