Karl-Heinz Rummenigge lauds Xabi Alonso and lays into Borussia Dortmund

In an interview with Funke media group, ex-Bayern Munich boss Karl-Heinz Rummenigge hails Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso (41). He praised the Spaniard's methodical approach and foresight, citing his time at Real Sociedad, stating, "It was clear he'd become a great coach." Rummenigge had predicted such a career for Alonso while serving as Bayern's CEO during Alonso's playing days from 2014-2017.

Alonso honed his coaching skills under some of the world's best, including Rafael Benitez, Jupp Heynckes, Pep Guardiola, and Carlo Ancelotti. Rummenigge also regarded Leverkusen, currently atop the Bundesliga, as Bayern's major rivals. He acknowledged their enticing soccer style, even taking aim at Borussia Dortmund's development and trading of top talents.

Rummenigge voiced concerns about the excessive transfers to fuel a profit-centric model that eventually led to the departure of stars like Jadon Sancho to Manchester United, Erling Haaland to Manchester City, and Jude Bellingham to Real Madrid. Rummenigget, a native of Westphalia, felt that this trend harmed Bundesliga's appeal as a whole.

Dortmund's strategy of developing and selling top prospects has drawn criticism from figures like Rummenigge, contributing to their current Bundesliga placement behind both Bayern and Leverkusen. Despite their struggles, Leverkusen, led by Alonso, consistently delivers alluring soccer, posing a formidable challenge to Bayern Munich's league dominance.
