Rui Veloso marks four-and-a-half decades of musical journey with performances in Lisbon and Porto.
Portuguese music legend Rui Veloso is set to celebrate his 45-year career with a series of unique concerts in November and December. The celebrated musician, who was born in Lisbon in 1957, will perform his greatest hits, reimagined with the rich, orchestral sound of the GNR Symphony Orchestra.
The concerts, scheduled for November 28 at Lisbon's Campo Pequeno and December 19 at Porto's Super Bock Arena - Pavilhão Rosa Mota, will feature specially crafted musical arrangements by acclaimed arranger and musician John Beasley. These arrangements blend Veloso's iconic songs with the symphonic grandeur of the GNR Symphony Orchestra, creating a fresh and expansive sonic palette that showcases the fusion of popular Portuguese rock and pop music with classical orchestration.
Beasley, an award-winning American jazz musician and composer, has carefully prepared these unique arrangements to offer audiences a one-of-a-kind concert experience where contemporary songwriting meets symphonic grandeur. The arrangements highlight some of Veloso's most popular songs, including 'There are no stars in the sky,' 'Passion (According to Nicolau da Viola),' 'Porto sense,' 'Porto Cove,' 'All the time in the world,' and 'Lunar side.'
Veloso's career spans over four decades, with seminal albums such as 'Ar de Rock,' released in 1980, featuring musicians Zeé Nabo and Ramon Galarza; 'Guardador de Margens,' released in 1983; 'Azeitonas,' released in an unspecified year; and 'Lado Lunar,' released in 1995. The album 'Ar de Rock' includes songs like 'Chico Fininho,' 'Shopping Girl,' and 'I know a peasant.' Veloso, a self-taught guitarist, has written several songs that are part of the Portuguese pop rock repertoire.
In addition to his solo career, Veloso has performed with musicians like B.B. King. He is also a Commander of the Order of Prince Henry the Navigator, one of Portugal's highest civilian honours.
