Royal Mail Issues Commemorative Stamps Highlighting Famous Scenes from Monty Python's Comedy Skits
Monty Python Stamps Celebrate 50th Anniversary of Iconic TV Series
In an exciting development for fans of British comedy, a new set of stamps has been announced to honour the 50th anniversary of the groundbreaking TV series, Monty Python's Flying Circus. The stamps, presented in a miniature sheet, will go on pre-order from August 7 and will be available for general sale from August 14.
This collection of six stamps pays tribute to the iconic comedy troupe, Monty Python, and features characters from the TV series. Scenes from the stamps include The Black Knight's defiant "'Tis but a scratch!", King Arthur and his knights receiving their divine quest, and Sir Robin's encounter with the Three-Headed Giant, all iconic moments from the beloved film, Monty Python and The Holy Grail.
Monty Python, formed in 1969, was made up of comics Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Sir Michael Palin, and Terry Gilliam. The group's anarchic, surreal, and satirical style revolutionized British comedy, setting new standards for comedy in the 1970s and beyond. Their success extended into film, notably with Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975), Life of Brian (1979), and The Meaning of Life (1983), which remain classics and popular for their unique humor and cultural impact.
Regarding the stamps, Sir Michael Palin, a member of Monty Python, made a reference to a character from Monty Python's Flying Circus. Eric Idle, another member, created the medieval musical "Spamalot", which won a Tony award for best musical. Unfortunately, Terry Jones, another member of Monty Python, died from a rare form of dementia in 2020 at the age of 77.
David Gold, Royal Mail's director of external affairs and policy, made a statement about Monty Python's impact on global comedy. He said, "Monty Python has had an enduring influence on comedy, not just in the UK but around the world. These stamps celebrate the brilliance of their anarchic humour and their unique ability to challenge the norm."
The Monty Python stamps, along with collectible products, are now available for pre-order. This is a fantastic opportunity for fans to celebrate the legacy of Monty Python and their undeniable impact on British comedy.
