News Article: Princess Alexandra Makes Rare Public Appearance at Grandson's Graduation
Royal family member Princess Alexandra attends her grandson Alexander Ogilvy's graduation ceremony at Sandhurst.
Princess Alexandra, the only living granddaughter of King George V and a cousin of the late Queen Elizabeth II, has made a rare public appearance at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst to celebrate her grandson Alexander Ogilvy's graduation from the Sovereign's Parade.
Alexander Ogilvy's Graduation
On August 9, 2025, Princess Alexandra attended the Sovereign's Parade at Sandhurst to celebrate Alexander Ogilvy's graduation. This event marked a rare public engagement for her. She was accompanied by her son James Ogilvy, daughter-in-law Julia, and granddaughter Flora Vesterberg.
Graduates of the 44-week course at Sandhurst are formally commissioned into the British Army. Alexander Ogilvy, who has joined a small group of royals who have attended the institution, including Prince William, Prince Harry, and Prince Edward, will now begin his military career.
Princess Alexandra's Past Royal Appearances
Princess Alexandra's public appearances have significantly decreased in recent years. However, she was last seen on the balcony after King Charles and Queen Camilla's coronation but has not been present at Trooping the Colour since 2022. She was also spotted at the royal family's annual Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace in 2023.
Rachel King, a news writer at Town & Country, reported that Princess Alexandra's grandson's graduation was a noteworthy appearance given her recent reduced royal duties.
Alexander Ogilvy's Background
Before attending Sandhurst, Alexander Ogilvy studied at Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh. He spent a gap year in Australia at Scots College in Sydney, coaching rugby and mentoring students in Indigenous education. He earned a degree from Brown University in 2020, majoring in computer science and economics and captaining the rugby team.
