Rowing Elite Kicks Off Olympic Preparations in Bitter Cold

The chilly winds of Paris 2024 Olympics preparations are blowing through Germany's rowing elite as they take the first significant step with their performance test in frigid Dortmund. This annual assessment serves as a barometer for the team's early-season form. Jasper Angl and Benedict Eggeling, a dynamic duo hailing from Münster and Hamburg, emerged victorious in the coxless pair, a crucial category for the composition of the German eight. Trailing close behind were Wolf Niclas Schröder/Marc Kammann from Berlin/Hamburg and Mattes Schönherr/Olaf Roggensack from Potsdam/Berlin.

Five rowers from the eight squad outperformed their personal bests in the erg test the previous day, showcasing their commitment and improvement. In the absence of world champion Oliver Zeidler from Munich, Jonas Gelsen from Frankfurt clinched the single scull race, edging out rivals Marc Weber from Marburg and Paul Berghoff from Magdeburg.

Playing second fiddle in the women's skiff race was Tabea Schendekehl from Dortmund, who edged out her competitors Juliane Faralisch from Frankfurt and Maren Völz from Potsdam. The German Rowing Federation (DRV) has provisionally secured six of the available 14 starting spots for the prestigious Paris Olympics.

Heading to Lucerne, Switzerland, for the post-qualification event taking place in May, the DRV is aiming for more tickets to the 2024 Olympics. Sports director Mario Woldt emphasized that the team's primary goal is not to prioritize individual boat success but to maximize overall medal prospects, even if that means weakening another boat's chances for individual glory.

German Rowing Team's Olympic Performance

The German rowing team delivered an impressive showing at the 2024 Summer Olympics, contributing to the country's overall medal haul. Notably, Tabea Schendekehl made history by earning a bronze medal in the women's quad event.

However, the "Dortmund test" does not appear as a distinct milestone leading up to the Olympics or specifically during it. Instead, the focus remains on the collective team performance, emphasizing the DRV's dedicated efforts in developing medal-winning boats.

Key Insights

The Washington rowing program boasted a record-breaking 11 total medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, with German rowers Tabea Schendekehl and her teammates among the contributors. This success is a testament to the German Rowing Federation's strategic approach in fostering a strong, competitive team.

Meanwhile, North Rhine-Westphalia's rowing team demonstrated a strong showing in Dortmund, with Wolf and Kammann from Berlin/Hamburg leading the way. This early-season momentum will certainly impact preparations going forward, making the team a top contender for the Paris Olympics.
