Hiking Trail No. 22: Mammoth Journeys Through the Heart of Greece

Hiking Trail No. 22 offers a captivating exploration of the stunning Greek landscape, winding its way through several mountain ranges and picturesque villages. The trail begins at the serene village of Agoriani in Parnassos, where the journey sets off on its adventurous course. As you make your way along the path, you'll traverse the rugged terrain of the Parnassos and Parnitha mountain ranges, taking in breathtaking vistas and the crisp mountain air.

One of the trail's highlights is the Valley of the Muses in Elikonas, a tranquil and enchanting valley that's said to have been the birthplace of the nine Muses in Greek mythology. The trail then continues uphill towards Ronies, providing a challenging yet rewarding climb for hikers.

As you venture further into Elikonas, you'll encounter the rougher parts of Zagaras, before passing through the localities of Ypokrini and Chaliki. The trail then leads you to the village of Askri, offering a chance to rest and refuel before continuing your mammoth journey.

The trail also takes you through the mountains of Korombili, Pastra, Kirfi, and Kitheronas, each offering unique landscapes and challenges for the hiker. The path is not specified regarding its length or difficulty level, making it suitable for both experienced and novice hikers.

As you make your way through Elikonas, the trail winds down to the village of Kyriaki. At this point, the city of Livadeia can be seen in the distance, marking the point where the trail diverges from Elikonas and heads towards Kyriaki.

One of the trail's most significant destinations is the Bafi refuge in Parnitha, which serves as the trail's end point. The exact location of the Bafi refuge is not specified in the trail description, adding an element of mystery to the journey.

Path No. 22 also connects the monastery of Osios Loukas to the seaside through Medea, offering a unique blend of historical and natural beauty. There are two different paths from Elikonas (or Zeriki) that lead to Paliovouna and Arvanitsa, both continuing up to the village of Elikonas.

These well-signposted paths offer hikers the opportunity to explore the higher parts of Parnassos or descend to Davlia and the monastery of Saint Jerusalem. No matter which path you choose, Hiking Trail No. 22 promises an unforgettable mammoth journey through the heart of Greece.
