Rostock's Olympic Bid Shift: Rostock's Ob German Town Delays Decision on Olympic Bid

Delay in Rostock's Olympic application commitment decision - Rostock's Olympic Bid Delay: City Council Cannot Reach Decision Immediately

Hey there! Let's chat about Rostock's unexpected move regarding its bid for the Olympics in 2036, 2040, or 2044.

Rostock's Mayor, Eva-Maria Kröger (Left), surprised everyone by postponing a decision about the city's application to serve as an external venue for a potential German Olympic bid. She pulled a Dringlichkeitsvorlage (urgent motion) from the scheduled Bürgerschaft meeting until the next Rostock Bürgerschaft gathering on July 23rd.

"Whether the Rostock Bürgerschaft makes a decision on this matter in June or July 2025 is less important. What truly matters is setting a significant signal before the summer break, and that requires thorough, careful preparation. There are valid questions that can't be addressed in detail until the current meeting," Kröger explained in a letter to the Bürgerschaftsabgeordneten (council members).

SPD and Greens Want Citizen Decision

Prior to this announcement, it was known that SPD and Greens had filed a joint petition demanding a citizen vote on the question of the Olympics. Furthermore, a motion was proposed suggesting a complete abandonment of the bid for 2036, as that year marks the 100th anniversary since the Berlin Olympics in 1936, held under Nazi rule.

By the end of May, four German cities and regions had submitted their applications to the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) for hosting the Olympics in 2036, 2040, or 2044. The final decision on a German bid is set to be made by autumn 2026 at the latest. There's been a lot of interest in Rostock and Warnemünde among the applicants, according to the city administration.

Previous Attempts Unsuccessful

"Rostock, with the sailing area before Warnemünde, is highly suitable for hosting Olympic sailing events. Additionally, other Olympic sports such as football at the Ostseestadion, handball, basketball, and volleyball, as well as Goalball, could be offered in the existing arenas at StadtHalle or HanseMesse," the withdrawn resolution stated.

All past attempts to bring Olympic competitions to Warnemünde have failed. During Berlin's unsuccessful bids for the Olympics in 2000 and Leipzig in 2012, Warnemünde was the top contender for the sailing events.

  1. The SPD and Greens in Rostock have urged for a citizen vote on the city's potential bid for the Olympics, given the city's historical significance as a possible venue for sailing events, having been the top contender during Berlin's bids for the Olympics in 2000 and Leipzig in 2012.
  2. As employment policies are crucial for the city, Mayor Eva-Maria Kröger has decided to postpone a decision on Rostock's bid to serve as an external venue for a potential German Olympic bid, ensuring its priorities remain focused on thorough and careful preparation for a significant decision that will impact not only the city's sports scene but also its employment opportunities.
