Rostock police arrest driver with blood alcohol nearly four times the limit
Police in Rostock conducted extensive traffic checks on Thursday to combat drink and drug driving. The operation, held at Mühlendamm, saw officers stop around 280 vehicles between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM. A 50-year-old driver was arrested after recording a blood alcohol level nearly four times the legal limit.
The joint operation involved roughly 30 specially trained officers from the Rostock Police Department and the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern State Police. They focused on detecting drivers impaired by alcohol, drugs, or medication. Of the vehicles checked, four drivers faced administrative penalties, while one was placed under criminal investigation.
In every case where impairment was suspected, officers took blood samples and immediately banned the drivers from continuing their journeys. All administrative offences stemmed from drug use, with preliminary tests showing cannabis or cocaine. Two drivers had their cases referred to licensing authorities for further review of their fitness to drive. The most serious incident involved a 50-year-old German man, whose blood alcohol level reached 1.98 per mille—far above the 0.5 legal threshold. Authorities have emphasised that impaired driving remains a major factor in severe road accidents.
Police have confirmed that similar checks will remain a regular part of road safety efforts. The operation aimed to reduce risks caused by drivers under the influence. Further enforcement actions are expected in the coming weeks.
