Rostock BPOL under investigation: Allegations of large-scale industrial and organized smuggling; Accused individuals questioned following substantial evidence collection
The Federal Police Inspectorate for Combating Crime in Rostock has launched a series of operations in Nordwalde, Wöllstein, Berlin, and other locations, as part of an ongoing investigation related to a trial before the District Court in Duisburg.
Two main suspects of Lebanese origin are at the centre of the trial, with allegations that they were part of a criminal organization that smuggled a large number of foreigners into the country for profit. Tragically, one such case resulted in the drowning of 108 people in the Mediterranean while trying to reach Italy from Libya.
During the operations, several suspects were questioned, and extensive evidence was secured, including mobile phones, laptops, and storage media. The purpose of the searches was to seize evidence to prove false statements and possible witness tampering.
The Public Prosecutor's Office in Duisburg is involved in the investigations, and Marieluise Hepe of the Public Prosecutor's Office Duisburg can be contacted for additional information. Meanwhile, Karina Skibitzki of the Federal Police Inspectorate for Combating Crime Rostock is also available for queries.
In the Duisburg trial, witnesses have made significantly different statements in court compared to their initial statements to the police, raising suspicion of incitement to perjury to exonerate the accused in the original proceedings. As a result, criminal proceedings have been initiated against the witnesses for the suspected offense of perjury under Section 153 of the German Criminal Code.
The investigations are ongoing, with the examination and evaluation of the seized mobile devices being conducted by specialist federal police officers in the field of mobile phone forensics. The outcome of these investigations could potentially shed light on the allegations of witness tampering and further the course of the trial.
