Rose Byrne’s Oscar buzz grows after Film Critics Circle win—with an awkward twist

Rose Byrne has won Best Actress at the Film Critics Circle Awards for her role in If I Had Legs, I'd Kick You. The victory comes as speculation grows about her first Oscar nomination. If successful, she would join just two other Australian actresses to win the Best Actress award.

Byrne’s path to the stage wasn’t without an awkward moment. While presenting the award, Ethan Hawke brought up a scathing review she had written years earlier. In 2010, she rated his novel The Hottest State two stars on Goodreads, calling it reminiscent of a Ryan Adams song—but not as good. The comment resurfaced during the ceremony, leaving Byrne visibly embarrassed.

Her criticism of Hawke’s work first appeared in 2007, when she spoke to Spiegel Online about the book. The interview, published on 20 February, had long faded from public attention—until Hawke revived it on stage.

The win strengthens Byrne’s chances of an Oscar nod for If I Had Legs, I'd Kick You. A nomination would place her among a select group of Australian actresses to compete for the top prize. Meanwhile, her old review has unexpectedly returned to the spotlight.
