Rosa von Praunheim, a trailblazer in the fight for gay rights, has died at 83. The filmmaker, activist, and artist passed away suddenly but peacefully in Berlin on Tuesday night. His work reshaped queer cinema and inspired generations of LGBTQ+ advocates.

Born in Latvia, von Praunheim became one of Germany’s most influential queer voices. His 1971 film It Is Not the Homosexual Who Is Perverse, But the Society in Which He Lives caused outrage and led to the country’s first Pride parades. The provocative movie challenged societal norms and put LGBTQ+ issues in the spotlight.

Von Praunheim leaves behind a legacy of fearless activism and groundbreaking art. His films, protests, and public battles helped shape modern LGBTQ+ rights in Germany. A private burial has already taken place in Berlin.
