Title: Rory McIlroy Misses Tournament in Abu Dhabi Due to Rib Injury, Justin Thomas Shines

Rory McIlroy, the four-time Grand Slam champ, expressed his disappointment after being sidelined from the Abu Dhabi championship due to a rib strain. The medical scan revealed a fatigue fracture in one of his ribs.

McIlroy suffered an alleged back injury during the South African Open and ended up losing a playoff against World Number 1 McIlroy. 251 Graeme Storm, England, clinched the championship on Sunday.

"It's extremely disappointing to withdraw from the HSBC Championship in Abu Dhabi", McIlroy shared in a statement on Monday. "I thoroughly enjoy this event and it's one of the best on the European Tour. I'm honestly quite frustrated to miss this week due to injury, but I'm confident the event will be a success."

McIlroy, who last topped the world rankings in September 2015, had hoped to overtake Jason Day with a win in Abu Dhabi, a place where he's played the last six years, finishing second four times.

While Rory was unable to participate, Justin Thomas continued his impressive run, setting a potentially record-breaking performance in the Sony Open in Hawaii. Thomas finished at a stunning 27 under 249, six strokes ahead of Olympic gold medalist Justin Rose.

As for McIlroy, despite being excluded from the tournament, his return to form and enthusiasm for racing ahead of Jason Day served as a hint of things to come.
