Rory McIlroy Condemns Home Fans' Abuse at 2025 Ryder Cup
Golf star Rory McIlroy has condemned the behaviour of some home fans during the 2025 Ryder Cup. The Northern Irishman faced constant abuse and even had a beer thrown at him during the event.
McIlroy was targeted throughout the tournament, with jibes and offensive comments directed at him and his wife, Erica. He described the behaviour as unacceptable and stated that it will not be tolerated at the 2027 Ryder Cup in Ireland.
The ugly scenes unfolded on Saturday, with McIlroy and fellow Irishman Shane Lowry both subjected to horrible abuse from portions of the crowd. Lowry had to be held back by his caddie after facing similar treatment. McIlroy expressed confusion about why home fans were abusing him more than supporting their own players.
McIlroy noted that there was a significant security presence on Saturday due to the tense situation. He joked about wishing security had been more lenient, but acknowledged that the majority of fans were respectful. However, he emphasised that golf should be held to a higher standard and that fans should support their own team and players.
McIlroy's comments follow a weekend of controversy at the 2025 Ryder Cup. While the specific details of security measures for the 2027 event in Ireland remain unclear, McIlroy has made it clear that such behaviour will not be tolerated.
