Rory McIlroy Caught Wielding Unfamiliar Wedges Prior to Irish Open Competition
Rory McIlroy, the four-time major champion, is set to compete in the Amgen Irish Open this week, seeking a second title at the event he previously won in 2016 at The K Club.
The Northern Irish golfer will tee off at 8:00am local time on Thursday and 1:00pm on Friday. He will be playing alongside Thriston Lawrence and Kristoffer Reitan.
McIlroy has made a change to his wedge lineup for the Amgen Irish Open, switching from his TaylorMade MG4s to the new MG5 models. The new wedges come with 60°, 54°, 50°, and 46° lofts, and McIlroy was spotted with a 61° MG5 wedge that has a 61° RM stamping on the back. He was also seen with another MG5 wedge that has RM printed on the back without a degree stamping.
In his last competition before the Amgen Irish Open, McIlroy finished T12 at the BMW Championship and T23 at the 30-man Tour Championship, bringing his PGA Tour season to a close at the end of August. Despite the results, McIlroy stated that he wants to get himself into contention and sharpen his game before the Amgen Irish Open.
At the Tour Championship, McIlroy ranked 19th for Strokes Gained: Around the Green and 20th in Scrambling, making 12 up-and-downs from 19. The new MG5 wedges could potentially boost his performance in these areas.
McIlroy's upcoming schedule includes the BMW PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup. As the tournament favourite at the Amgen Irish Open, he will be looking to start his summer schedule on a high note.
