Rookie running back Jaydon Blue of the Cowboys sustains an injury during team practice

Dallas Cowboys rookie running back Jaydon Blue has suffered a setback in his preseason preparations, after a bone bruise in his heel was caused by a step on his foot during practice. The injury, which occurred before the team's preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams, has left Blue's availability for initial preseason games uncertain.

Blue, who was selected in the fifth round from Texas, was taken down by teammate Sam Williams during a handoff in practice. The incident left Blue limping and he was carted off the field, but he was able to walk under his own power from the medical tent to the locker room.

Despite the initial concern, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones indicated that he does not believe the injury to be significant. However, further evaluation is necessary and Blue has been sidelined for the Cowboys’ first preseason game.

In three years at Texas, Blue rushed for 1,161 yards and 11 touchdowns, and also totaled 368 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns. He had impressed the Cowboys coaching staff since joining the team, and was set to see plenty of reps in the preseason.

However, with Blue's injury potentially hampering his battle for the starting running back job, teammates like Javonte Williams may have an opportunity to gain an advantage. The specific nature and details of Blue's lower body injury have not been disclosed, and his recovery timeline will depend on the progress of his healing.

Blue, who scored eight rushing touchdowns in one of his years at Texas, had also demonstrated his potential with six receiving touchdowns in another year. Despite missing the preseason opener, the Cowboys will hope that Blue can return to full practice and compete for the starting role as the preseason progresses.

This is the latest update on Jaydon Blue's injury and preseason status as of mid-August 2025.

Jaydon Blue's injury, sustained during practice by a teammate, has cast a shadow over his potential starting role for the Dallas Cowboys. Despite initial assurances from executive vice president Stephen Jones that the injury might not be significant, its impact on Blue's availability for the initial preseason games remains uncertain. Given Blue's absence, teammates like Javonte Williams may capitalize on this opportunity to gain an edge in the battle for the starting running back position. Blue's recovery timeline will reportedly depend on the progress of his healing, with specifics about the nature and details of his lower body injury yet to be disclosed. The Cowboys will be hoping for a speedy recovery, as Blue's return to full practice could significantly boost their chances in American Football, specifically NFL and football games.
