Rookie pitcher for the Orioles falls short of achieving a perfect game late in the match with only four outs remaining, experiencing a highly unfortunate setback.

The Baltimore Orioles and the Houston Astros faced off in the second game of their three-game series on Saturday, with the matchup taking place at 7:10 p.m. ET. The game was a nail-biter, with a significant moment occurring in the 8th inning that will be remembered for years to come.

Rookie pitcher Brandon Young, a native of Lumberton, Texas, less than 100 miles northeast of Houston, was on the verge of making history. With 23 batters retired, Young had thrown eight scoreless innings, striking out six, and was four outs away from etching himself into baseball history with a perfect game.

However, the perfect game bid came to an end when Houston Astros' second baseman Ramon Urias hit a softly hit groundball between the pitcher's mound and third base line. Young rushed to field the ball, picked it up with his bare hand while falling backward, and attempted an off-balance throw to first base. Unfortunately, his throw went wide, allowing Urias to reach first base and breaking up the perfect game and no-hitter bid.

The costly play also resulted in an error, which allowed Urias to advance to second base. Despite the setback, Young showed resilience, striking out the next batter, Astros' center fielder Taylor Trammell, to end the inning.

Adley Rutschman, the Orioles' catcher, praised Young's pitching performance, stating he executed his plan well. The game ended with a 7-0 Orioles win, leaving the team with a record of 56-66, while the Astros sit at 68-54.

The Associated Press contributed to the report about the game. Young's parents and grandfather were in attendance at Daikin Park for the game, adding personal significance to the night for the young pitcher.

Ryan Canfield, a digital production assistant for our website Digital, covered the event. Despite the heartbreaking end to Young's perfect game bid, fans and analysts alike are eager to see what the future holds for this promising pitcher.
