Romania's top diplomat journeys to Kyiv, affirming solidarity with Ukraine

Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu began her official visit to Ukraine on August 17, 2022, marking the first bilateral trip by a Romanian foreign minister to Kyiv since the Russian invasion in 2022.

During her visit, Minister Țoiu expressed deep admiration and best wishes for the children at the "School of Superheroes," an educational initiative within the National Cancer Institute. The School of Superheroes allows children undergoing long-term treatment to continue their studies.

The visit to the School of Superheroes was not mentioned as part of Minister Țoiu's agenda before her meeting with young patients at Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital. The hospital, which was deliberately targeted in a Russian missile strike one year ago, widely condemned as a war crime, serves as a stark reminder of the humanitarian impact of the war.

Meeting with the young patients at Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital, Minister Țoiu described the emotional impact of the encounter. As a mother, she expressed that she cannot put into words the emotions these attacks have stirred in her. Seeing the innocent children undergoing treatment for serious diagnoses reminded Minister Țoiu of the strength and resilience of the Ukrainian people.

Discussions with Ukrainian officials focused on several key issues, including Romania’s strong support and solidarity for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression, the humanitarian impact of the war, bilateral cooperation on reconstruction and cross-border projects, European integration and EU membership prospects for Ukraine, regional security, interparliamentary cooperation, and support for Ukrainian refugees in Romania.

Minister Țoiu's agenda also includes a visit to Chernivtsi to meet with members of the Romanian community in the region.

Romania will continue to stand firmly with Ukraine in its legitimate fight, demonstrating a commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty, war recovery, and European future, alongside addressing humanitarian issues and regional security.

  1. The discussions between Minister Țoiu and Ukrainian officials highlighted Romania's solidarity in politics, focusing on topics such as war-and-conflicts, particularly Romania's support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.
  2. Amid general news about the humanitarian impact of the war, the war-and-conflicts topic was further emphasized during Minister Țoiu's visit to Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital, a stark reminder of the devastating effects of the ongoing conflict on innocent civilians.
