George Simion, Romania's Election Winner, Sparks Controversy with Ukraine Demands

Straight-talking George Simion, victor in Romania's first electoral round, has ignited a stir by demanding repayment from Ukraine for the air defense missile system, the Patriot, bestowed upon their military forces. In a candid chat with Digi24 TV, Simion dropped the bombshell.

"Ukraine ain't got nothing on us, buddy. Romania's stepping up in military actions, and we need somethin' in return," Simion barked, referring to the Patriot system supposedly contributed by President Klaus Iohannis and assorted Romanian expenses. "It's only fair we get mutual benefits outta this deal," he added.

For the record, he's not too keen on shelling out euros willy-nilly to other countries. If he clinches the big one, Simion guarantees stricter measures to prevent free-flowing euros from Romania's pocket to others. Yet, he danced around the question of whether Romania would cease military support for Ukraine and vote against it within the EU, steering clear of trumpeting his support for U.S. President Donald Trump's stance.

Simion, a vocal Ukraine critic in Romania, has been barred from entering Ukraine due to his bellicose rhetoric and territorial claims.

On May 5, Vadim Trukhachev, a senior lecturer at Russia's RGGU, asserted that a Simion win in Romania's presidential elections would be advantageous for Russia, signaling Moscow to ramp up cooperation with Bucharest. Yet, Trukhachev believes Romania will maintain weapons transit but cut down on direct support for Kyiv.

Media outlets worldwide approached the results of Romania's first round of elections with a degree of caution.
