Romanian Prime Minister Takes Action Against Corruption Following Bribery Scandal

Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan has taken a proactive stance against corruption in the tax authority ANAF and state-owned enterprises, following the resignation of Deputy Prime Minister Dragoș Anastasiu due to a bribery scandal.

Bolojan revealed that he has information about employees of the Finance Ministry with relatives who have companies delivering accounting or consulting services to the private companies controlled by ANAF. He has expressed that "we must not accept" bribery and protection fees, and has taken steps to replace ANAF leadership and send inspection teams to investigate potential corruption.

The practices being investigated involve potential conflicts of interest within ANAF, with the control teams tasked with verifying these allegations. So far, the prime minister has not publicly disclosed the identities of the employees or companies involved in these practices, nor has he specified whether he has reported these cases to the prosecutor's office.

The bribe paid by Anastasiu's companies was reportedly done under coercion, according to Anastasiu's claims. Bolojan stated that he did not know about the case involving Anastasiu and did not discuss it with him.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Bolojan has called on entrepreneurs to denounce such practices, and publicly condemned bribery. He emphasized the need for institutional transparency and integrity amid ongoing political scrutiny.

The scandal has highlighted systemic issues in Romanian public administration, which Bolojan acknowledged, recalling historical corrupt practices but rejecting any personal endorsement of such behavior.

Bolojan has not yet announced a replacement for Deputy Prime Minister Dragoș Anastasiu, who resigned on July 27. The investigation is ongoing, with control teams verifying the practices within ANAF.
