Romanian president puts forth Ilie Bolojan, former interim president, for the position of Prime Minister
Ilie Bolojan, a seasoned Romanian politician and leader of the National Liberal Party (PNL), was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Romania on June 23, 2025, following his nomination by President Nicușor Dan.
Born in 1969, Bolojan has held several important roles, including Mayor of Oradea (2008–2020), head of Bihor County Council (2020–2024), President of the Senate (2024–2025), and temporary President of Romania in early 2025.
As Prime Minister, Bolojan's political vision appears to focus on reforming and increasing the transparency and efficiency of state-owned enterprises (SOEs). He unveiled a plan to overhaul governance in these enterprises by publishing data on management remuneration and company performance, and by streamlining management structures, including reducing board sizes and capping earnings. This reform is aligned with Romania’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and demonstrates a push towards fiscal sustainability and increased accountability in the public sector.
President Dan expressed that it is in Romania's best interest to have a Government supported by a solid majority. He believes that Bolojan is the best person to make necessary adjustments in the state administration and lay the foundations for the Romanian economy to develop and bring prosperity to Romanians.
Bolojan acknowledged that the situation will not be easy but is convinced that with the president, parties, partners, and citizens, they can overcome the difficult situation and reposition Romania on the right track. He has outlined three directions for the government: putting the country's finances in order, work for good governance leading to development, and showing respect to Romanians.
The prime minister nominated by the president requires Parliament's approval. Bolojan will continue negotiations with other parties this afternoon to finalize the governing program. The four parties negotiating the governing program, along with the groups of national minorities, have enough seats to ensure the nomination can pass.
Dan emphasized the need to correct the financial deficit and highlighted Bolojan's track record in reducing spending. He suggested that political forces should collaborate for Romania's best interest, and believes that political parties understand this need for a solid majority.
