Romanian parliament selects fresh leaders for Senate and House of Deputies

The Romanian Parliament has named new leaders for its two chambers in accordance with the formation of a fresh administration, helmed by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. In the spotlight are Sorin Grindeanu and Mircea Abrudean.

Grindeanu, now the president of the Chamber of Deputies, triumphantly secured 201 votes, thwarting main rival Ionel Goidescu of SOS, who received a measly 20 votes in the final voting round, according to Euronews Romania.

As for the background, Grindeanu serves as the interim leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) following Marcel Ciolacu's resignation. Replacing Ciprian Șerban, who shifted to the Minister of Transport in the new government, Grindeanu also shoulders the role as interim president of the PSD post-Ciolacu's departure.

Meanwhile, Abrudean takes the helm as the president of the Senate, succeeding Bolojan, who vacated the position to assume the prime ministership. Before this, Abrudean held prominent roles, including serving as Secretary General of the government with ministerial rank and holding the vice presidency in the Senate.

The parliament also welcomed two new judges to the Constitutional Court of Romania: Mihai Busuioc and Csaba Asztalos. They replace Marian Enache and Livia Stanciu, whose tenures expire on July 13.
