Romanian foreign minister supports American peace initiatives, emphasizes the importance of Ukraine's involvement in any decisions regarding Ukraine.
In a significant development, Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu has expressed her support for a peace process in Ukraine that fully respects the country's sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.
Speaking at a meeting of EU foreign ministers on Monday, 11th August, Țoiu emphasized the importance of involving Ukraine directly in any negotiations, stating, "Nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine."
Țoiu's comments come as US President Donald Trump is expected to join European leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, for a virtual summit on Wednesday. The news was reported by Politico.eu.
In her statements, Țoiu highlighted the need for strong security guarantees to prevent future aggression, complementing NATO's defenses on its Eastern Flank, including specific measures for the Black Sea region. She also expressed her support for a ceasefire before substantive peace negotiations begin, arguing that negotiating amid active drone strikes is ineffective and that a ceasefire is necessary to build trust and make progress on the negotiations.
Țoiu welcomed US diplomatic leverage and initiatives for "a just and lasting peace" and supported continued American engagement in negotiations. She stressed the necessity of security guarantees that supplement NATO's deterrence and defense, particularly to secure the Black Sea region and Eastern Flank.
Romania remains a reliable NATO ally, cooperating closely with Ukraine on regional security and defense support. Țoiu has repeatedly praised Ukrainian resilience and leadership and indicated Romania's commitment to helping Ukraine's path towards EU accession.
In summary, Romania’s foreign minister advocates a peace process that firmly respects Ukraine’s agency, awaits a ceasefire as a precondition for talks, relies on robust security assurances, and involves active US and NATO diplomacy and defense cooperation.
