Romanian administration maintains its position following voting against a lack of confidence

The Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) led a motion of censure against the Romanian government on July 14, 2025, during a joint session of Parliament. The motion, which was met with criticism over the austerity measures and tax increases announced in the first fiscal corrective package, aimed to overthrow the government led by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan.

Despite vocal discontent from the Social Democrats and the initial appointment of a total of 154 MPs by the three main opposition parties (AUR, SOS, and POT), the motion received 134 votes in favour, significantly below the 233 votes required to overthrow the government. Out of the 398 MPs who attended the vote, only four voted against the government, and no votes were cancelled out.

Following the vote, AUR leader George Simion admitted that the party has limited power in Parliament and emphasised the need for public support and widespread protests to overthrow the ruling coalition. Simion also stated that AUR will challenge the government's decisions at the Constitutional Court and hold the government accountable.

In response to the government's authoritarian decision on the first fiscal corrective package, AUR has indicated that they may challenge the package at the Constitutional Court. Simion has further stated that AUR will continue submitting no-confidence motions in upcoming parliamentary sessions (August, September, and beyond).

The failure of the no-confidence motion was broadly expected, but the ongoing challenges from AUR show that the political landscape in Romania remains dynamic and contentious. The government's survival of the no-confidence vote secures its approval for the controversial fiscal reform package aimed at reducing the budget deficit, but the future remains uncertain as AUR continues to test the government's resolve and push for change.

  1. The ongoing challenges from AUR, such as their intent to challenge the government's decisions at the Constitutional Court and submit no-confidence motions, are evidence of the dynamic and contentious policy-and-legislation landscape in Romania.
  2. The politics surrounding the Romanian government's fiscal reform package have been heavily contested, with the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) indicating they may challenge the package at the Constitutional Court, as well as continuously submitting no-confidence motions in various parliamentary sessions.
