Navigating Ukraine's wheat through Romania at Night Becomes Possible
Good news for Ukrainian wheat exports! Thanks to Romania's River Administration, the Danube's Sulina arm is now illuminated, enabling nighttime transportation. This move is particularly beneficial for Ukraine, as it helps circumvent issues caused by the Ukrainian Black Sea ports blockage due to the ongoing conflict.
Navigating the Souina arm used to be a daytime-only affair, but with the recent installation of illuminated buoys and the provision of additional resources like 18 pilots and a digital navigation system, ships can now sail under the cover of darkness. Furthermore, ongoing dredging work aims to ensure the waterway remains navigable for various sized vessels.
The Sulina arm acts as a critical bottleneck in this alternative route, which is seeing an increased volume of Ukrainian wheat traffic post-conflict. In 2022, around 3655 ships sailed through the arm, a significant jump from the previous year’s 1823 figure. Just in the first nine months of 2023, another 3262 ships passed through, testifying to the route's growing importance.
Challenges persist
Exporting Ukrainian wheat through this makeshift route presents its own set of challenges. Ships must navigate the meandering arms of the Danube, including the straightest (and most frequently dredged) Sulina branch, which offers less resistance compared to other main branches.
Apart from the physical challenges, there is also the need for efficiency and safety. Ukrainian wheat exports flow through the Danube ports of Reni and Ismajil, heading towards the Romanian Black Sea port of Constanta before entering the Danube and either Sulina or the Cernavoda Canal. Some shipments even travel by rail, thanks to the recent revival of Soviet-type siding following the conflict's onset in Galati.
Boosting Efficiency
The nighttime navigation option is the latest effort to improve the transportation of Ukrainian wheat. The initiative aims to increase the efficiency and safety of shipments, making them less vulnerable to logistical snags. With over 60% of Ukraine's wheat exports currently passing through Romania, the stakes are high.
The benefits of nighttime navigation should not be overstated, however. The real solution lies in addressing the security risks and logistical challenges posed by the conflict, such as ensuring safe passage, maintaining port infrastructure, and coordinating with international partners to secure trade routes. Only then can the volume and efficiency of Ukrainian wheat exports through Romania be maximized.
