Romania carries out another evacuation of Romanian citizens from Israel

In the wake of escalating security tensions and conflict in the Middle East, Romania successfully evacuated 35 of its citizens and their immediate family members from Israel on June 26, 2025. This operation was a testament to Romania's commitment to safeguarding its citizens amidst regional conflicts.

The evacuation was carried out aboard a C-27J Spartan military aircraft of the Romanian Air Forces, with medical supervision from a joint Ministry of National Defence and SMURD team ensuring the health and safety of passengers during the transport.

The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) coordinated the evacuation amid deteriorating conditions, with the support of various diplomatic and military entities. The Romanian Embassy in Tel Aviv, the General Consulate in Haifa, and the Romanian Representative Office in Ramallah played crucial roles in organising and supporting citizens on the ground.

The MAE's Crisis Cell and mobile consular teams were instrumental in the evacuation process, mobilising to serve Romanian citizens in distress. The operation was also supported by regional counterparts, for whom the MAE expressed gratitude.

The evacuation was prompted by the intensifying missile exchanges between Israel and Iran, which heightened regional instability and posed risks to civilians. This conflict, which has largely died down following the US's strike on Iran's nuclear facilities on June 22, 2025 (Operation Midnight Hammer), had previously prompted the MAE to raise the alert level for the State of Israel to level 8 out of 9, advising against all travel.

Oana Ţoiu, the recently-confirmed foreign minister, expressed gratitude to all parties involved in the evacuations and repatriations. The MAE continues to coordinate with Romania's diplomatic missions, consular offices, and representatives of other EU member states, ensuring that Romania remains vigilant and prepared to act in the best interests of its citizens.
