Romania-bound cinema premiere of Radu Jude's Silver Bear victor, 'Kontinental '25', slated for June screenings
Unleashing Radu Jude's Masterpiece - Kontinental '25
Radu Jude's latest opus, Kontinental '25, set to premiere in Romanian theaters on June 20, is causing a stir in the film community. This thought-provoking drama-comedy snagged Jude the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay at this year's Berlinale.
The film follows the life of bailiff Orsolya, picking up pieces of her shattered conscience after the suicide of a homeless man she evicted. Shot in Cluj-Napoca, Bucharest, and their surrounding areas using an iPhone, Kontinental '25 is a testament to Jude's insatiable creativity and resourcefulness. Audiences can expect a part homage to Roberto Rossellini's Europa '51 woven into this innovative production.
The ensemble cast includes notable actors such as Eszter Tompa, Gabriel Spahiu, Adonis Tanța, Șerban Pavlu, Oana Mardare, Annamária Biluska, Adrian Sitaru, Marius Damian, Nicodim Ungureanu, Ilinca Manolache, and Dan Ursu.
Kontinental '25 is the production of Saga Film, under the guidance of producer Alex Teodorescu. It was co-produced with RT Features (Brazil), Bord Cadre Films (Switzerland), Sovereign Films (UK), and Paul Thiltges Distributions (Luxembourg). The film also received support from the Union of Film and Audiovisual Producers of Romania - Romanian Association for the Management of Audiovisual Works UPFAR - ARGOA.
Jude's impressive filmography includes the Golden Bear Award at the 2021 Berlinale for Babardeală cu bucluc sau porno balamuc, the Silver Bear for Best Director for Aferim! in 2015, and the CICAE Art Cinema award at the 2009 Berlinale for his debut feature film, Cea mai fericită fată din lume/ The Happiest Girl in the World. His 2012 feature Toată lumea din familia noastră/ Everybody in Our Family graced the Berlinale’s Forum section, while his 2016 Inimi cicatrizate/ Scarred Hearts won two awards at the Locarno International Film Festival and brought home the best director award at the Mar del Plata Film Festival. In 2018, his film Îmi este indiferent dacă în istorie vom intra ca barbari/ I Do Not Care If We Go Down in History as Barbarians received the Crystal Globe Award at the 53rd edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, making it the first Romanian feature to receive such recognition from the Czech film event.
Kontinental '25 promises to be another striking addition to Jude's illustrious career, tackling moral dilemmas with a deft balance of humor, poignancy, and introspection.
