A False Paradise: The Series' Heart
Meet Dennis W. (pseudonym), the epitome of a catch. A charming, alluring man with a successful law career on the verge of landing a seat at the European Court of Justice. Singer Matthias Rödders crosses paths with this dreamy con man in Cologne's vibrant nightlife, and before they know it, innocent flirting turns into a passionate, four-year-long relationship. Despite clear warning signs and the growing concerns of his nearest and dearest, Matthias refuses to see the truth - love can render even the sharpest minds blind.
Eventually, even the deeply smitten singer can no longer deny the truth: he's fallen for a mastermanipulator who's swindled him out of his love and fortune through sophisticated emotional tactics. Discovering other victims who've been manipulated in the same way, Matthias decides to take decisive action. He wants to bring the fraudulent attorney to justice and put an end to his deceitful ways.
Docuseries director, producer, and writer Nils Bökamp ponders an intriguing query that underscores the series: "How could someone overlook this?" While the question may come as shocking to an outsider, the docuseries powerfully illustrates how easy it is for anyone to fall victim to a (romance) scammer's charms. What's more, Dennis W. wasn't merely adept at hoodwinking his relationships - he disguised himself as a legitimate attorney and fooled even seasoned lawyers for years.
