Roma Sever ties with De Rossi after dismal Serie A debut
AS Roma have announced that they have relieved Daniele De Rossi of his duties as head coach of the first team, following a disappointing start to the 2025/26 Serie A season.
The Italian football legend, who spent a significant part of his career with the club, took over as interim boss from Jose Mourinho in January. However, his tenure was short-lived as the team failed to win any of their first four Serie A games, drawing with Genoa last Sunday. This unfortunate streak marks the fourth time in Roma's history that they had failed to win any of their first four Serie A games, the others being in the 1974-75, 1984-85, and 2010-11 seasons.
Despite the disappointing start, De Rossi managed a total of 30 games for AS Roma in all competitions, winning 14, drawing 9, and losing 7. His team averaged 1.70 points per match, which, while not exceptional, is a testament to the challenges faced during his tenure.
De Rossi's contract with AS Roma was until 2027, but he had recently signed an extension that would have kept him at the club until 2027. This decision to sack De Rossi was made in the best interests of the team, as the club looks to turn around their fortunes and focus on youth development and tactical innovation for the remainder of the season.
Gian Piero Gasperini has been appointed as Roma's new head coach, effective immediately. Gasperini, known for his focus on youth development and tactical innovation, is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the team. The club's communication regarding the new technical guidance will follow in due course.
Daniele De Rossi will always be remembered for his 616 appearances for AS Roma as a player, a testament to his love and dedication to the club. The club and its fans wish him all the best in his future endeavours.
