Mexican tenor Rolando Villazón will receive the 2026 Rheingau Music Prize. The award, now in its 33rd year, recognises his outstanding contributions to classical music. A ceremony will take place during his concert at Eberbach Abbey in Eltville am Rhein. The prize will be presented on Thursday, August 20, at 7:30 p.m. Villazón will perform with the ensemble L'Arpeggiata in the abbey's basilica. The Hessian Ministry of Science and Research, Art, and Culture funds the €10,000 award.
The jury highlighted Villazón's artistic versatility, powerful voice, and magnetic stage presence. Beyond singing, he has worked as a director, author, and television presenter. His efforts to make classical music engaging for all ages have earned widespread praise.
Timon Gremmels, Hessian Minister for Science and Research, Art, and Culture, congratulated Villazón on the honour. The award also acknowledges his dedication to mentoring young musicians. His influence extends beyond performance to shaping the future of the art form. The Rheingau Music Prize ceremony will coincide with Villazón's concert at the historic Eberbach Abbey. The event marks the 33rd time the award has been granted. His achievements in music, education, and outreach will be celebrated before an audience in the basilica.
