The court ultimately handed down a reduced sentence of one year, four months, and 28 days in jail, conditionally suspended for two years. This meant Rohan would avoid imprisonment so long as he abides by the imposed good behavior bond. In addition, his driving privileges were revoked for five years.
In a heartwrenching scene outside the courtroom, Melissa's parents implored the public for understanding as they hoped to maintain a semblance of a civil relationship with Rohan for the sake of their grandchildren, who were just four and six years old when tragedy struck.
