Rodrigo Dourado joins Club América as Jardine’s defensive midfield anchor
Rodrigo Dourado has signed with Club América after head coach André Jardine personally reached out to him. The Brazilian defensive midfielder arrives with a reputation for breaking up opposition play and controlling the tempo of matches. Fans of his former club, Atlético San Luis, admired him despite his modest goal tally.
Dourado spent over 100 games with Atlético San Luis, scoring just six times. Yet his ability to win the ball and set up attacks made him a key figure. When Jardine contacted him about joining América, the midfielder admits he felt nervous during the waiting period before finalising the deal.
Once settled, he spoke openly about his style. He sees himself as a defensive anchor, someone who prefers shielding the back line over attacking. Flexibility also matters to him—he can play alone in midfield or alongside another holding player. Beyond his own role, Dourado stresses teamwork as a priority. He believes his best quality is bringing out the strengths of those around him. More players in midfield, he argues, will help the team find better balance and control.
Dourado now joins América for the Clausura 2026 campaign under Jardine’s management. His experience in ball recovery and distribution will add stability to the squad. The club will look to him to organise play from deep positions.
