Rockies triumph over Diamondbacks in a thrilling 14-12 game, thanks to Beck's double home runs and Tovar's five hits
In the heat of the deserts, Jordan Beck! The guy slugged two homers and a triple, adding three runs and scoring four, rallying the Colorado Rockies from a five-run deficit to snatch a thrilling 14-12 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Ezequiel Tovar crowned the major league-worst Rockies (8-37) with a much-needed victory, as they broke their four-game losing streak against the Diamondbacks (24-22). It was their first loss in 152 games when they managed to score at least 12 runs!
Kicking off the game with a leadoff homer, Beck set the tone against Zac Gallen. Three batters in, Hunter Goodman sent a two-run shot, giving Colorado a 3-0 lead. When the smoke cleared, and dust settled, Beck conjured a tiebreaking two-run shot off Ryan Thompson (1-1) in the 7th inning, securing the Rockies' 13-11 edge.
Tovar cleaned up with a magnificent five-hit fling, just missing the cycle by flying out one short of a double.
The D-backs fought back with RBI singles by Ketel Marte and Eugenio Suárez, plus a throwing error from Tovar at shortstop – tying it at 3 in the first against starter Germán Márquez. Lourdes Gurriel Jr.'s two-run triple and an RBI single by Pavin Smith made it 6-3 in the second.
Tovar started the third with a homer, and Kyle Farmer evened the score with a two-run shot – knotting it up at 6-all.
Suárez greeted reliever Angel Chivilli with his 14th homer, Alek Thomas hit his first, and Corbin Carroll dished out an RBI single, cementing a 10-6 Arizona lead in the fourth. Suárez's sacrifice fly pushed the Diamondbacks ahead by five in the fifth.
Goodman responded with a two-run single, Farmer added a two-run double off Jalen Beeks in the sixth, narrowing the gap to 11-10. Michael Toglia tied it up with a double.
Gallen allowed six runs and eight hits in five innings. Losing steam, Gallen has given up four home runs in the first three innings – repeating such a feat only one other time. Márquez threw 82 pitches and let seven runs – five earned – lose in three frames, with Jake Bird (1-1) yielding one run in two innings for the win, and Seth Halvorsen securing three outs for his second save.
Colorado went ballistic in both the 7th and 8th innings, sending eight batters to the plate, scoring seven breathtaking runs against the D-backs' bullpen. A key moment for the Rockies!
