Rockies secured a 3-0 victory over the Cardinals, with Freeland delivering 7 1/3 robust innings on the mound.
Colorado Rockies Break Eight-Game Losing Streak with 3-0 Shutout Over St. Louis Cardinals
In a much-needed victory, the Colorado Rockies ended their eight-game losing streak by blanking the St. Louis Cardinals 3-0. The game, which started after a 41-minute rain delay, marked the first time the Rockies had shut out the Cardinals since their meeting in Denver on July 23.
Hunter Goodman was the star of the show for the Rockies, hitting a two-run home run in the fourth inning. The home run, which travelled a impressive 442 feet, was not only the longest at Busch Stadium this season but also Goodman's team-leading 23rd of the season.
Kyle Freeland pitched 7 1/3 innings for the Rockies, a season-high. Freeland's performance was particularly notable as he reached 900 career strikeouts, making him the third pitcher to do so with the Rockies, joining Jorge De La Rosa and Germán Márquez.
Victor Vodnik closed out the game, pitching the final 1 2/3 innings to earn his third save for the Rockies.
On the Cardinals' side, Matthew Liberatore (6-10) allowed three runs on four hits and a walk in 4 1/3 innings.
In a separate development, Cardinals first baseman Willson Contreras left the game in the fifth inning due to a right foot contusion. Contreras was hit by a pitch from Rockies starter Kyle Freeland on August 12, 2025, in a game against the Colorado Rockies. Despite the injury, Contreras remained in the game until the sixth inning but was then replaced. X-rays showed no structural damage to his foot, and he was listed as day-to-day. Since the injury, Contreras has been out of the lineup but returned to play by August 20, 2025, when he hit a solo home run against the Miami Marlins, indicating he has recovered enough to actively participate in games again.
Looking ahead, the Rockies' LHP Austin Gomber (0-6, 6.52 ERA) will face the Cardinals rookie RHP Michael McGreevy (4-2, 4.40) in the next game.
