Robust local environment propels sales upwards at Fasig Tipton's New York-bred Yearling Sale
Record-Breaking 2025 Fasig-Tipton New York Bred Yearling Sale
The 2025 Fasig-Tipton New York Bred Yearling Sale saw unprecedented success, with a record-breaking total of $23,870,000, marking a 14% increase from the previous record set in 2023. The two-day event was characterized by strong buyer demand, exceptional yearling quality, and a flourishing New York breeding program.
One of the highlights of the sale was the purchase of a colt by Klaravich Stables for $325,000. The colt is a son of Early Voting, out of the winning Smart Strike mare Truly Striking. His dam is a half-sister to the Grade 3 Futurity Stakes winner Slipstream, and his sire is Constitution. The colt was purchased by agents Sallusto and Kimmel on behalf of MWG.
Another notable sale was a filly purchased by Klaravich Stables for $360,000. This bay filly is from an iconic American family, with her second dam being Weekend Strike, a Smart Strike half-sister to quadruple Grade 1 winner Court Vision. The filly's first foal was sold by Longford Farm for $390,000.
The most expensive filly at the sale was a granddaughter of the breed-shaping sire Galileo, purchased by Ed Swyer of Hudson Ridge Farm for $400,000. Swyer was particularly interested in the filly's pedigree and plans to partner with others to own the filly.
Legion Bloodstock emerged as the top buyers at the sale, purchasing eight yearlings for a total of $1,450,000. Denali Stud topped the consignors' list, selling 16 horses from their draft for a total of $2,445,000.
The average price over the two days was $119,950, a 15% year-on-year increase. The sale's most expensive colt was sold for $525,000, a half-brother to six winners, from the family of champion and influential sire Cozzene.
The success of the sale can be attributed to several key factors. The New York state-bred program is regarded as the best in the country, with a concentrated collective effort involving breeders, the New York Racing Association, and political support for thoroughbred racing in New York. This nurtures and sustains market confidence and activity.
The sale featured improved quality in terms of pedigree and physical conformation, with top-ranked sires like Practical Joke and Early Voting represented among the high-priced lots. Several top-priced yearlings matched or surpassed historical sale records, reflecting exceptional physical and pedigree appeal to buyers.
RNA (Reserve Not Achieved) rates were down, indicating fewer unsold horses and higher bid competitiveness. The momentum from prior Saratoga sales further fueled buyer interest and confidence at this specific New York-bred sale.
Quality consignments and strategic buyer engagement also contributed to the success of the sale. High-profile consignors like Indian Creek and Hunter Valley Farm brought sought-after yearlings, while notable buyers such as Repole Stable participated, demonstrating active engagement by major industry players.
Overall, the success of the 2025 Fasig-Tipton New York Bred Yearling Sale stemmed from a synergistic combination of a flourishing New York breeding program, exceptional yearling quality, strong buyer demand, record sales benchmarks, and supportive industry and political infrastructure.
A notable sale was Waterville Lake Stables' half-sister to three winners from three runners out of the Street Cry mare Cuccidati, which was sold to Klaravich for $360,000. Another significant sale was the filly out of a winning Galileo sister to Group 3 Give Thanks Stakes and Listed Vinnie Roe Stakes winner Sizzling, which was sold for $400,000.
Klaravich Stables also bought a daughter of the stakes-placed Violence mare Three Hawk for $370,000. Kathleen Burke Schweizer and Daniel Burke bought Too Sexy on the advice of her trainer Christophe Clement, who died last month.
The median price remained unchanged from the previous year at $85,000. The filly purchased by Klaravich for $360,000 was the most expensive filly at the sale, while the son of leading sire Into Mischief was advertised by Coolmore at $25,000 the year that Tucker sent Cuello De Luna to Ashford.
Boyd Browning, president and CEO of Fasig-Tipton, expressed satisfaction with the results of the sale, as key performance indicators saw significant gains. The success of the 2025 Fasig-Tipton New York Bred Yearling Sale underscores the strength and vitality of the New York thoroughbred racing industry.
