Motown Legacy Tainted: Smokey Robinson Denies Allegations of Sexual Assault

In a dramatic turn, the renowned Motown icon, Smokey Robinson, finds himself at the heart of a scandal as four ex-housekeepers accused him of sexual assault in a shocking lawsuit filed earlier this week.

The lawsuit, unveiled in Los Angeles Superior Court, alleges that Robinson subjected his accusers to obscene acts, with the majority of the alleged incidents taking place at his Chatsworth residence - a neighborhood nestled in the far northwestern stretch of Los Angeles.

The accusers, identified under pseudonyms Jane Does 1-4, leveled a series of startling accusations against Robinson. Three of the accusers appeared at a Los Angeles press conference wearing masks, while the fourth presented virtually. Their lawyer, John Harris, claimed that they were low-wage employees working under a hostile environment, lacking the means to protect themselves from Robinson's advances.

According to the lawsuit, Robinson allegedly assaulted one accuser at least 23 times between 2014 and 2020, often in areas of the house without security cameras. Another accuser alleged that Robinson sexually assaulted her at least 20 times, dating back to 2012, with the music mogul forcing her into his bedroom and performing a bizarre “ritual” involving leaving his bathroom naked or nearly so to soil the towels on his bed for subsequent assaults.

Two other accusers could corroborate similar accounts of being subjected to such behavior, with one of the former housekeepers claiming that Robinson assaulted her at least seven times during her 13-month tenure as an employee. All the accusers claimed that Robinson's wife, Frances Robinson, who is named as another defendant in the lawsuit, perpetuated a hostile work environment, often screaming at them and employing ethnically derogatory language.

Robinson, a pioneer of Motown Records, gained fame as the founder of the vocal group the Miracles and later as a solo artist and record executive for the label. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.

However, Robinson's lawyer, Christopher Frost, vigorously denied the allegations, branding the lawsuit as a cynical attempt to extort money from the 85-year-old legend. Frost asserted that the evidence will exonerate Robinson and promised to petition the court to dismiss the case. He also condemned the press conference held by the accusers' lawyers as an aberration, undermining the boundaries of acceptable conduct for lawyers in this context.

The unfolding saga has captured the attention of the media, with the public eagerly awaiting Robinson's response in his own words. The allegations against Robinson mark a significant blow to his storied career in the entertainment industry, sparking questions about the industry's neglect of low-wage employees and the perception of invincibility enjoyed by high-profile figures.
