"Robert Trujillo Emotionally Describes Ozzy Osbourne's Moving Funeral"
Ozzy Osbourne's Private Funeral Honours Rock Icon's Legacy
Ozzy Osbourne, the legendary rock icon, was laid to rest on his 250-acre estate in Birmingham, his hometown, on July 30, 2025. The private service was attended by family, friends, and numerous notable musicians, marking a poignant farewell for the music world.
Osbourne's death was due to a combination of factors, including an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, acute myocardial infarction, coronary artery disease, and Parkinson's disease with autonomic dysfunction.
The day before the funeral, a large public procession took place in Birmingham. Thousands of fans gathered to pay their respects as the hearse carrying Osbourne’s coffin traveled past his childhood home. The procession included police motorcycles and six Mercedes funeral cars, with a live brass band playing renditions of Black Sabbath songs.
The funeral service was intimate and security-heavy, despite the rain showers. Seating was provided under large awnings, and special catering accommodated the guests. Notable moments included a floral tribute spelling "Azie" placed atop a fountain on the estate grounds, a visit from the procession vehicles to the iconic Black Sabbath Bench, and an emotional eulogy delivered by Geezer Butler, a member of Black Sabbath.
Kelly Osbourne, one of Ozzy's daughters, sang at the funeral, and her lyrics were blown away by the wind, creating a whimsical atmosphere. The service was a mixture of humorous and emotional speeches, with the sun coming out when Geezer Butler spoke, creating a "magical moment" according to Robert Trujillo, bassist of Metallica, who attended the funeral and described it as "very, very beautiful."
The funeral served as a continuation of honouring Ozzy’s legacy, following his farewell performance in Birmingham two weeks prior, which reunited Black Sabbath after 20 years and featured other legendary bands as a charity event supporting Parkinson’s research and children’s hospitals.
The funeral was a fitting tribute to Ozzy’s status as a rock icon and beloved figure in his hometown. Sharon, as well as their children, Aimeé, Kelly, and Jack, joined the mourners to pay tribute. The service was a small gathering, but it included exclusive interviews with Jake E. Lee, Geezer Butler, Zakk Wylde, and Rudy Sarzo, sharing their memories of Ozzy and reflections on their final moments with the legend.
Thousands of fans flocked to Birmingham to bid farewell, with the funeral balance private family moments with a broad public and musical community tribute. The death was followed by an outpouring of tributes from across the music world, reflecting the impact Ozzy Osbourne had on the industry and his fans.
