RobboX is being taken to court by Louisiana over claims of sexual exploitation
In a move that has sent shockwaves through the gaming industry, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has filed a lawsuit against Roblox Corporation, alleging that the popular online platform enables child sexual exploitation. The lawsuit, filed on August 14, 2025, in the 21st Judicial District Court, Parish of Livingston, argues that Roblox knowingly facilitates systemic sexual exploitation and abuse of children and does not adequately warn parents about these dangers.
The lawsuit was prompted by a July 2025 incident in which Louisiana police arrested a suspect possessing child sexual abuse materials while actively using Roblox. The complaint cites Roblox’s lack of age verification requirements, allowing predators to pose as children and children to bypass protections. Roblox, with its 82 million daily active users, many under 13, is criticized for its default safety settings and maturity labels being insufficient.
In response to the lawsuit, Roblox has announced stricter rules on sexual content, improved age verification methods, and new automated detection systems to filter inappropriate content. However, these efforts have not been enough to quell the concerns raised by the lawsuit, which has negatively impacted Roblox’s stock, causing it to fall more than 10% following the announcement.
The legal claims in the lawsuit include violations of state consumer protection law, negligence, and public nuisance. The case is part of wider scrutiny by state attorneys general into youth safety practices on digital platforms.
The lawsuit highlights problematic user-created experiences like Escape to Epstein Island, Diddy Party, and Public Bathroom Simulator Vibe, which featured sexually explicit or predatory content. It also accuses Roblox of failing to implement age verification measures, neglecting parental notice requirements, and allowing predators to use the platform for harmful purposes.
Roblox, in its defence, has stated that it dedicates substantial resources to help detect and prevent inappropriate content and behaviour. It has also begun piloting facial age estimation and video-selfie verification for users aged 13-17 in private, unfiltered chats.
However, the lawsuit contends that these efforts fall short and fail to address systemic vulnerabilities on the platform. It calls on parents to be aware of the "clear and present danger" posed by Roblox and to take measures to protect their children while using the platform.
As the case progresses through the courts, it remains to be seen whether Roblox will be held accountable for its alleged failure to prioritize child protection over growth, profit, and user experience. The lawsuit seeks a permanent injunction, restitution, attorney fees, civil penalties, and all other allowable damages.
