Roadway on Kolyma remains iced due to snow thaw; transportation disrupted
In the frigid regions of the Tomponsky and Oymyakonsky Districts, a snow avalanche has disrupted traffic on the federal automobile road R-504 'Kolyma'. The incident occurred at km 594 of the FAD 'Kolyma' on March 27, 2024.
The snow avalanche, followed by additional avalanches at km 590+000, km 594+000, and km 594+200, has necessitated a movement restriction on the highway. As of March 28, 2024, traffic remains halted from Tepliy Klyuch (km 478) to Ust-Nera (km 963).
Road services, including forces from the road organization 'DEP-133', have been dispatched to address the issue. Nine pieces of road equipment are being used: combined road equipment - 3 units, K-700-based bulldozer - 2 units, snowplows - 2 units, excavator - 1 unit, and loader - 1 unit. These teams are working tirelessly to clear the snow mass and restore traffic as soon as possible.
To ensure the safety of drivers, several driver parking areas have been established at km 552, km 596, and km 728. Additionally, road signs, parking areas, and catering points have been organized at strategic locations such as km 430 in Handyg, km 507 in Tepliy Klyuch, km 755 in Kyubeme, and km 1009 in Ust-Nera.
Two traffic police posts have been set up to maintain order and safety during this period. However, the Federal State Institution 'Vilyui Highway Management' urges drivers to refrain from traveling in this direction until traffic is fully restored. The 24/7 phone number for the institution is 79245938028.
Heavy snowfall persists in the region, posing a continued risk of further avalanches. To monitor the situation round-the-clock, organized road equipment monitoring is in place. Despite the ongoing challenges, efforts are being made to ensure the safety of travellers and the restoration of traffic on the Kolyma Highway.
