Breaking: Top South Ural Transport Official Remains in Custody

According to the "New Day" news agency, the Chelyabinsk Regional Court has denied the request to change the custody status of Stanislav Kharchenko, the first deputy head of the regional ministry of transport.

Kharchenko, a high-ranking official, was taken into custody on Christmas Eve, as a result of searches conducted at his workplace and residence. Authorities accused him of misusing his position.

Investigations point towards potential irregularities in the signing of contracts. In 2021, contracts valued at 478 million rubles for the repair of a road to Zhabikovo, and 174.8 million rubles for the improvement of the Myshish to Chebarkul road on the M-5 highway in 2024, are under scrutiny.

Kharchenko has vehemently denied any wrongdoing. Despite this, the court approved the prosecutor's request for detention as opposed to house arrest. In the past, Kharchenko's defense team has filed multiple appeals to challenge this decision, all to no avail.

This latest attempt, seeking to replace detention with house arrest due to Kharchenko's good standing, health issues, and decorations, has been unsuccessful.
