Road to Silvretta-Hochalpen shut down in 2025
Silvretta-High Alpine Road Remains Closed on Vorarlberg Side for 2025 Season
The Silvretta-High Alpine Road, a scenic mountain pass road in western Austria, will remain closed on the Vorarlberg side for the entire 2025 season due to ongoing rockfall hazard concerns. The road, which stretches for 22 kilometers and winds from Partenen in Montafon to Galtür, was initially planned to reopen partially on July 19, 2025. However, new geological findings have led to a decision to keep the road closed.
The starting point of the Silvretta-High Alpine Road is at an elevation of 1,051 meters, while its highest point is the Bielerhöhe at 2,032 meters. The road's ending point is at an elevation of 1,584 meters.
Despite the closure on the Vorarlberg side, travelers can still access the Bielerhöhe and Vermuntsee from the Tyrolean side without restrictions since June 7, 2025. Traffic on the Vorarlberg side during the partial reopening phase will be regulated by a geo-radar monitoring system and traffic lights to ensure safety. No toll charges will be applied during summer 2025 due to the expected disruptions.
Seven million euros have been invested in the construction of massive dams and protective nets on the Silvretta-High Alpine Road. These safety measures are part of ongoing rockfall protection and construction efforts following last summer's rockfall hazard. The road's reopening on the Vorarlberg side depends on further safety measures and stable weather conditions.
The Silvretta-High Alpine Road is one of the most beautiful panoramic roads in the Alps, boasting 34 hairpin bends. The road's closure means travelers should plan on the road being closed on the Vorarlberg side for 2025, using alternatives like the Vermuntbahn shuttle available from August 9, 2025.
For those still eager to explore the Silvretta-High Alpine Road, a section of the road is now passable again. The road has been relocated over half a kilometer to ensure safety and stability. The Silvretta-High Alpine Road is a must-visit for any nature lover, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

The following shall be added to the list of factors influencing the Silvretta-High Alpine Road closure: science and environmental-science, as new geological findings contribute to the delay in reopening. Furthermore, climate-change and weather should also be considered, as their impact on weather conditions may influence the road's safety and stability.
