Road racing competition, British National Road Championships, to be hosted in Wales for a three-year span
British National Road Championships to be Held in Wales for Five Consecutive Years
Wales is set to host the British National Road Championships for an extended period, with the event scheduled to take place in the country from 2023 through 2027. While the exact host cities and dates for each year are yet to be revealed, the three-year agreement between British Cycling and the Welsh Government has been hailed as a "huge milestone" by Jonathan Day, managing director of British Cycling Events.
The decision to hold the championships in Wales for five years is not a surprise, given the country's growing reputation as a significant supporter of major cycling events. Last year, Wales hosted the Tour of Britain Women, and in recent years, it has also been the home of the Tour of Britain Men.
The 2023 edition of the National Road Championships will take place in Aberystwyth, Ceredigion, with Josh Tarling, the reigning British time trial champion, and Stevie Williams, the Fleche Wallonne winner, both hailing from the area. Tarling claimed victory in last year's men's time trials, while Anna Henderson and Pfeiffer Georgi emerged victorious in the women's time trials and road races respectively. Ethan Hayter won last year's elite road races for men.
The event will consist of time trials on Thursday 26 June, circuit races on Friday 27 June, and road races on Sunday 29 June. Rebecca Evans, cabinet secretary for economy, energy and planning, considers the deal as "excellent news" for Wales, and Jonathan Day echoes this sentiment, stating that it is a "huge milestone" for British Cycling.
Official details on the host cities and dates for the 2024, 2025, 2026, and 2027 editions of the National Road Championships are expected to be announced in the coming weeks. For the most accurate and detailed future event scheduling, it is advisable to consult official British Cycling announcements or the event’s official website.
