Elisa Longo Borghini, the reigning champion of the Giro d'Italia and several other prestigious races, has withdrawn from the 2025 Tour de France Femmes due to a gastrointestinal infection [1][2][3]. This marks her second time abandoning the race, having been forced to leave the competition in 2023 due to an infection in her left leg [3].

Previous Infections

  • 2023: Longo Borghini left the Tour de France Femmes ahead of Stage 7 due to a left leg infection [3].
  • 2025: She withdrew before Stage 3 due to a gastrointestinal infection [1][2][3].

The Race So Far

Longo Borghini had come into the Tour de France Femmes as one of the favourites for overall victory [4]. However, she began experiencing symptoms on the first stage, which worsened over the weekend. Her teammate, Elisa Balsamo, was also forced to leave the 2023 Tour de France Femmes ahead of Stage 7 due to fatigue [5].

Current Standings

With Longo Borghini and Movistar's Marlen Reusser, who also withdrew due to stomach issues, leaving the race, the general classification is now led by Kim Le Court (AG Insurance-Soudal), who is wearing the yellow jersey after two days of racing [6]. Marianne Vos, a rider for Visma-Lease a Bike, is also tied at the top of the general classification [7].

Future Plans

Following her withdrawal, Longo Borghini plans to focus on recovery and then target the World Championships in Rwanda, scheduled for September 2025 [1][2]. Her participation in other races for the remainder of the season has not been confirmed.
