Fire in Alvite, Moimenta da Beira, Portugal: Preparedness Raised as Threat Persists

The ongoing wildfire in Alvite, Moimenta da Beira, Portugal, has prompted local authorities to raise the state of preparedness, despite the fire being extinguished around August 12. The decision comes as a result of persistent flare-ups and threats, primarily from a nearby fire in the Sernancelhe area, which could potentially move towards Moimenta da Beira, particularly near Cabaços and Vilar.

The firefighting efforts remain intense, with approximately 400 firefighters, 299 vehicles, and two aerial resources dedicated to controlling the fires in the area. Despite close encroachments of fire near several villages, there have been no houses or significant structures burned, but there has been substantial loss of green areas and agricultural land.

The fire in Alvite, which started on a Friday, has been active for at least one day and currently mobilizes the most firefighters. During its active phase, a rare "fire tornado" was observed, a fire-induced vortex with strong rotating winds, intensifying the fire's spread and making firefighting more challenging.

The meteorological conditions during the period of the raised state of preparedness are predicted to be of significant complexity. The aim of raising the state of preparedness is to reinforce pre-positioning of means. The Civil Protection is responsible for this decision.

The state of preparedness will be raised to the maximum level at 00:00 on Sunday and will remain at this level until 23:59 on day 12. However, it's important to note that the raised state of preparedness does not indicate a change in the number of active fire fronts (two) or the fact that the fire is the one currently mobilizing the most firefighters. It also does not affect the current number of firefighters (approximately 400) or aerial means (nine) involved in the firefighting efforts.

Despite the ongoing threat, there has been no specific risk to houses in Alvite or Paraduca, as those risks were mentioned earlier. On this Saturday morning, houses in Paraduca were at risk due to the fire. However, as of now, there have been no reports of houses being burned in Paraduca.

The fire authorities and local officials continue to monitor conditions closely, and no detailed weather forecasts specific to this fire zone were provided in the sources. However, the mention of a "front" moving from the Escurquela area toward Moimenta da Beira suggests that fire susceptibility remains high due to favorable spreading conditions.
