River Weser Nixonville Now Offers Reinstated Water Activities

The closure of the bathing area in the Little Weser due to the presence of water fleas has had a significant impact on water sports enthusiasts, but a decision has been made to allow certain water sports activities in a designated area.

The allowed area for water sports extends to the buoy chain in front of the Little Weser weir, including the Deichschart - height Schwankhalle/Umgedrehte Kommode location. However, it's important to note that only sports that take place above the water surface are permitted.

The Senators for Environment, Climate, and Science and the Interior and Sport aim to enable the use of the entire Lake Werder and the Little Weser for the coming summer and subsequent years. This decision was made in response to the closure of these areas for swimming and water sports.

To participate in these activities, sportspeople must wear swimming or life jackets. This requirement is intended to provide buoyancy and enable rescue at the water surface in case of an emergency, as the growth of water fleas near the water surface makes it impossible for rescue diving at this time.

The Senators are currently in contact with municipalities that have experience managing invasive and highly competitive plants in bathing waters. However, it's currently unrealistic to completely remove the invasive plants based on expert assessment. If water fleas spread again at the Little Weser location, authorities will take action to ensure bathing remains possible until the end of the bathing season.

No new locations for water sports with a life jacket have been announced at this time. The acquisition of a powerful mowing boat is currently being intensively examined by both Senators for the potential management of invasive plants in bathing waters.

This decision to allow water sports with a life jacket was made following an inspection with representatives of sports clubs, the German Lifeguard Association (DLRG), and firefighting forces. Swimming in the Little Weser remains prohibited for safety reasons.

For those seeking specific measures for Lake Werder and the Little Weser, it's recommended to consult local environmental agencies or water management authorities in Hamburg or the surrounding area for detailed and updated information.

Water sports activities are now permitted in a designated area that extends to the buoy chain in front of the Little Weser weir, including the Deichschart - height Schwankhalle/Umgedrehte Kommode location. However, only sports that take place above the water surface are allowed.
