In the volatile region of the Levant, the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas continues to escalate, resulting in a significant loss of life on both sides.

Protests have been held by pro-Palestine groups, demanding an immediate cessation of Israeli incursions upon the Gaza Strip and the withdrawal of all military personnel from the area. The protesters have labelled the current Israeli ground offensive as a genocide and are calling for an "intifada" or the "shaking off" of the Israeli state.

On the other hand, Israeli military convoys are conducting a ground offensive to root out Hamas terrorists in the Gaza Strip. The militant group, armed and equipped by Iran and Qatar, launched a surprise offensive on Israel from the Gaza Strip on October 7th, 2023. The initial attack involved a massive number of kidnappings of mainly Israeli citizens.

The conflict has taken a heavy toll on the civilian population, with more than 200 hostages reportedly in the captivity of Hamas and no known attempt at negotiation for their release. The Gaza Strip, under a military blockade by Israel, is also facing a shortage of resources, including medical aid and food.

President Joe Biden has announced the shipment of missile defense systems to protect Israel against rocket launches from Hamas. However, the President has also ordered the evacuation of embassy and military base officials in nearby nations due to reports of targeted attacks.

In the midst of this turmoil, voices of reason are urging for diplomacy and peace. An Op-ed titled "One Year from October Seventh: Israel Fights On" was written by Todd Rado '26, questioning the meaning of the phrase "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free". This phrase, popular among Hamas supporters, calls for the eradication of the Jewish people and state and the establishment of Palestinian control across the region.

Ashwin Prabaharan '26, the Chief Opinions Editor of the article, also wrote another Op-ed titled "Hamas' Savagery Knows No Limit". The article highlights the brutal tactics used by Hamas during the conflict, resulting in a high number of civilian casualties.

The United Nations has approved a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire from both parties in the conflict. As the world watches, let us hope for a peaceful resolution and a return to normalcy in the region.
