Wiesbaden DLRG Rescues Weakened Swimmer from Rhine

In a swift and coordinated operation, the Wiesbaden and Schierstein local group of the Deutsche Lebens-Rettungs-Gesellschaft (DLRG) successfully rescued a weakened swimmer from the Rhine near Walluf on Sunday.

The incident unfolded when the water police alerted the DLRG about a swimmer in distress in the Rhine. The affected individual was spotted by the rescue boat's crew in the fairway just as a freighter was about to pass. The timely intervention of the DLRG saved the swimmer from a potentially dangerous situation.

The DLRG, a volunteer-based organization, is responsible for providing water rescue services, ensuring water safety, and raising awareness about water safety. Their operations extend to conducting water rescues and search operations, providing lifeguard and first-response services, organizing public education events, and supporting emergency response with technical equipment and professional training.

In this instance, the DLRG's role was to conduct a water rescue operation. The rescue boats, which can be deployed at any time during operational hours, were dispatched from the Schiersteiner harbor tip towards Walluf. The Wiesbaden and Schierstein DLRG local group occupies one of the three DLRG stations during the summer months in a weekly rotation. The duty station is staffed on Saturdays from 13:00 to 18:00 and on Sundays and holidays from 10:00 to 18:00.

Upon reaching the distressed swimmer, the rescue boat's crew administered first aid. The rescued person, who was suffering from cramps, was later handed over to the crew of an alerted rescue vehicle and the police on land. It was later revealed that the swimmer was under the influence of drugs, which may have contributed to their weakened state.

The fire department and DLRG remind the public that swimming in the Rhine is particularly dangerous due to the strong current and shipping risks. They recommend using designated bathing areas, supervised lakes, or public baths for safety.

The integrated control center Wiesbaden was informed about the incident, and the deployment data was forwarded to the responsible control center in the Rheingau-Taunus district. The press release was published by the fire department of the state capital Wiesbaden.

The DLRG's work is integral to the broader emergency response framework, aiming to reduce water-related accidents and fatalities through lifesaving operations, public safety enforcement, and education. Their actions often involve coordinated action with other rescue services including fire departments, civil defense, and sometimes cross-border cooperation.
