Rivalrous 5,000m showdown looming between Olympic gold medalists Kipyegon and Chebet in the global arena
In the upcoming 5,000m final at the World Championships, set for Saturday, Kenyan athletes Faith Kipyegon and Hellen Obiri Chebet are gearing up for a highly anticipated clash. This will be their first encounter since last year's Paris Olympics.
Chebet currently holds the world record for the 5,000m, which she set at the Eugene Diamond League meet in July. Kipyegon, 31, hasn't raced in the 5,000m since the Paris Olympics, where she took silver behind Chebet. The Kenyan pair, along with teammate Agnes Ngetich, who is the third fastest woman of all time in the 5,000m, qualified for the final at the National Stadium on Thursday.
Ethiopian athlete Gudaf Tsegay, the reigning world 5,000m champion and the current world 10,000m crown holder, is also in the mix. Tsegay came away from the Paris Olympics without a medal but is keen to make further amends. She won bronze in the 10,000m event in the recent Olympics.
Tsegay admires Kipyegon, her rival in the 5,000m final, and considers her an amazing person and athlete. However, unlike Kipyegon, who set a world record in the 1,500m in Eugene this season, Tsegay does not hold any world records.
The field for the 5,000m final is strong and open, according to Tsegay. She is unsure about the strategy for the final, whether it should be tactical or fast, and will discuss it with her coach. Tsegay is satisfied with her tactical race after competing in the 10,000m final on Saturday.
Chebet, a double Olympic champion, is aiming to complete her set of world championships medals. She idolises Kipyegon and will be competing against the defending champion in the final. Kipyegon, on the other hand, is happy with her 5,000m performance in the heats, as it was her first race of the season.
The 5,000m final promises to be an exciting and closely contested event, with each athlete bringing their unique strengths and strategies to the table. As the competition heats up, fans are eagerly awaiting the outcome of this high-stakes race.
